Home measurements can make a wig consultation more productive, but they do not replace a fitting. Cap dimensions and measurement instructions vary. Ask for the instructions for the exact piece before using your numbers to select or order it.
Prepare before you measure
Use a flexible measuring tape, a mirror and a place to record your results. Have someone help if you cannot keep the tape positioned consistently. Arrange any remaining hair as you intend to wear it under the wig.
Record the units. A measurement without inches or centimeters can create an avoidable misunderstanding.
Record the common measurements
Wig manufacturers commonly use:
- Circumference: measure around the head along the route specified in the cap guide, returning to the starting point at the front hairline.
- Front to back: measure from the front hairline over the center of the head to the nape hairline.
- Ear to ear: measure across the top between the specified points near each ear.
Follow the chosen manufacturer's diagram for the landmarks. For an example, Jon Renau explains its three-measurement process. Its method is a reference for its products, not a universal SE Wigs sizing rule.
Repeat if the route changes
If the tape slips or your readings differ, reposition it and repeat. Write down each result and note how your hair was arranged. Ask your fitter to check inconsistent numbers instead of guessing.
Do not use the circumference alone to assume that every cap marked average will fit the same way. Avoid translating a clothing size or hat size directly into a wig order.
Check the actual fit
During a try-on, ask the fitter to demonstrate where the wig should sit. Check the forehead, ear areas and nape. Explain pressure, rubbing or movement rather than trying to correct every problem by tightening the straps.
Bring glasses or accessories that you normally wear. If you expect your hair volume to change, discuss how that may affect the fit.
Get help before ordering
For a custom piece, confirm which measurements the salon needs and how it will verify them before work begins. A preliminary home measurement is information for the discussion, not a promise that a cap will fit.
